The C12 is a 4-stroke, inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 12.0 liters (732 cubic inches). It features turbocharging and air-to-air aftercooling to enhance combustion efficiency and maintain power at higher altitudes or under heavy loads. The engine utilizes the Hydraulically Actuated Electronically Controlled Unit Injection (HEUI) system, which allows precise fuel delivery, improved throttle response, and reduced emissions. Modern 2021 marine variants continue to leverage this system for better fuel economy and environmental compliance.
The engine has a bore of 5.1 inches and stroke of 5.9 inches, 12 valves (2 per cylinder), and a counterclockwise rotation from the flywheel.
Dry weight approximately 2,588 lbs (marine) depending on configuration..
Performance and Power Output
For on-road applications, the C12 delivers up to 445 horsepower at 1,600 rpm and 1,650 lb-ft of torque at 1,200 rpm. Marine propulsion variants (2021) are rated from 340 to 490 bhp, with some high-performance versions reaching 705 bhp, operating between 1,800–2,300 rpm. The engine performs efficiently for long-haul trucking, buses, heavy machinery, and marine vessels.
Peak torque is designed to optimize fuel economy and durability under continuous loads, and the engine can operate efficiently up to 1,200–2,100 rpm with redline protection at 2,100 rpm.
Reliability and Maintenance
The C12 is known for long-term durability, often surpassing 600,000 miles in trucks with proper maintenance and some units achieve close to 1 million miles before significant overhaul.
